If you had asked me couple years ago whether US should negotiate with Iran or not I would have said yes. But I am not sure if I would be supportive of that now. I am against the use of force against Iran! No way! But at the same time negotiating with Iran’s today’s government means two things: 1- you negotiate with an illegitimate government whereas 10 years ago or even 2 years ago you had the chance to negotiate with a legitimate one (or at least, despite the criticisms, a government accepted by major political elite factions). 2- you grant the hardliners the green winner card of starting negotiations with the US. That is what they want: Be tough with the West and they will respect you!what does being tough mean?
What should West and the US do now? There should be some form of negotiations given the importance of Iran in the region. (maybe?) I understand that. But at the same time I think that there should be more emphasize on the violation of human rights and events followed the rigged elections. It is not an easy time for Obama’s administration for sure. His policy during the election riot was great in my opinion. But I am hesitant to say the same thing about his today’s policy towards Iran! what do you think?
I don’t want the same logic directing the US policy towards normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey be employed in the case of Iran. (please read my previous post)
